About the Department
The Department of Social Work started as DSSA (Diploma in Social Service Administration) in PSG School of Social Work in the year 1952 affliated to University of Delhi. In the year 1962 the department was upgraded as a PG department offering M.A. Social Work affliated to Universiy of Madras. Later in the year 1978 it was affliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and bacame a Research Depatment offering M.Phil and Ph.D programmes.
The programme offers kowledge, skills and values for professional committment among the students. The students are equipped to work with a diverse group of people, execute a wide range of social welfare activities and work for their continuing professional development through inclusive practice. The curriculum includes three major components namely theory, field work and research.
The uniqueness of Social Work Education lies in its concurrent field work practice. The purpose of field work is to provide the student an interface between classroom education and actual practice in social work agencies. The field work is structured to provide students practical experience in various Human Service Organizations and Government Bodies under the stringent guidance of the faculty.
The Department considers education as means of social change and transformation through the integration of theory and practice. The department collaborates with international, national and local organizations for field action projects, research and training. In addition the department organizes several workshops and trainings throughout the year with its effective alumni support.
